Dorestad Ropewalks Women are occupied with the ropewalks next to the house. They are making ropes. A lot of ropes are needed for ships. We are in Dorestad, a city next to the water, at the beginning of the ninth century. People make a living by using the river for trade. Some household work is done inside. The housewife is cracking open an egg. It all looks very peaceful and friendly. Nevertheless, the tranquillity of Dorestad does not last forever. In the course of the ninth century, political unrest arises, which gave Vikings the chance to attack, plunder, and burn the city several times. In addition, the river changed its course and the city slowly diverted further and further away from the bank.
