Left right…! The Roman Empire occupies large parts of Europe. The Romans also entered the Lowlands. They constructed their border forts along the Rhine. This is the Limes, the northern border of the Roman Empire. From their perspective, all the locals are savages; they call them Germans. The Romans think that they are the superior civilization, and they are actually quite right. The Romans have a highly organized army, they have built an enormous road network, and have erected gigantic buildings. This is all new to the locals. A military drill can be observed from the border fort, Castellum Albanianae, where about five hundred soldiers are stationed. The centurion drills his soldiers with the help of a curly vine; those who do not listen receive a slap. This corner of the empire, Germania Inferior, is not considered to be very attractive. It is an outpost where mainly auxilliarii are stationed. They are non-Roman men; they can become Roman citizens by completing their service. The Germanic farmers who live in the border region of the Limes, are greatly influenced by the foreign occupiers. Their agricultural products are desperately needed to feed the troops. They become “romanized” and familiar with the more luxurious lifestyle of Romans. Soldiers are recruited among their sons. Romans
